I love the picture of the little boy looking up the chimney…
Curious
Anxious
Expecting
He is expecting what? According to the stories he has heard as a child and according to what he has been told, there is supposed to be this big fat man, jolly as can be, with a white beard and a red suit, coming to his house to deliver him some presents.
“He is coming to my house!” “When?” “Sometime soon?” “I’ll just look, peek, and anxiously expect this jolly Saint Nick to arrive soon.”
That’s the fun part of Christmas! That’s the simplicity and child-like magic of Christmas, and its many childhood stories. But there is a similar story in history that we have heard for years. The story tells of the arrival of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to this earth. God in the flesh! This is not a bed-time story – this was the real stuff!
And just like that child in the picture, before Jesus arrived there were great expectations as well! A special nation, Israel, was promised a Savior, and they waited like that boy at the bottom of the chimney. With curiosity of what to imagine, anxious feelings and high expectation, they were looking!
The prophets came along giving over 300 messages and predictions of a Savior that would come in time. And we discovered it was a long time. Almost 400 years in between the Old and New Testament. Generations came and went, and people died waiting and expecting. And then it happened! The angel Gabriel arrived and shared the good news with Zechariah and Elizabeth first, and then Mary, and then Joseph. Jesus was coming!
With the news of fulfilled expectation – there was great celebration!! And that is really why we celebrate Christmas. Our long awaited Savior, came and lived among us, to love us and redeem us.
Let me ask you something. This Christmas season, what are you looking for? What are you expecting?
The greatest thing we could hope for…came as a baby to this earth. Jesus came! He arrived and He brought hope, peace, love, and joy! And someday Jesus will come back again. This time it won’t be as a baby, but as our victorious commander and Lord!
Are you ready?!
Are you looking for him?
Are you telling others about him?
If not…why not?
He’s coming – be ready!
Grace and Mercy to you all,
Pastor Rex
